It’s approaching midnight. I’m sitting in the office comfortably with my keyboard in my lap. I did away with my standard desk. Well, I actually just moved it into the other room out of the way. I’ve been tryng to come up with a way that I could arrange things so I wouldn’t have to have a massive desk taking up a whole bunch of space. I’m still working out some of the kinks of the new setup. I think I’ll be able to stick with it though. It’s much less obtrusive and ugly, more comfortable, and misuses less space.
I’m sitting on a thin futon mattress folded twice so it makes a nice sized comfortable seat against the wall. I have the computer in the bottom part of a cheap TV cart with my monitor and laptop on top of the cart. The keyboard (wireless) is in my lap, and the mouse (also wireless) is next to me, sitting on the back surface of my laptop case. This is the least ideal part. Mousing down and to the side isn’t really comfortable and not truly ergonomic. I have yet to figure out a better solution. The laptop bag helps a lot by raising the mouse up to about lap height, but it’s still a little bit awkward.
The futon mattress can be unfolded and moved around to a variety of positions, and the cart can be wheeled around to different spots. Makes for a pretty flexible work environment. The laptop is also a little awkward, but I don’t often do a lot of work on both computers at one time right now, so I think it’s workable.
I also formatted a partition on my computer and installed Windows 7 Beta, which I’m using right now as I type. I have to say that I like it so far. I haven’t encountered any huge crashes or bugs that are stopping me in my tracks. The install was smooth and easy, and I was up and running really quickly.
I’m gonna head into the bedroom and lay down for a while. I might write some more on the laptop before I’m ready to sleep, but we’ll see. Depends on my mood.
